Top 10 Essential Math Formulas Every High School Student Needs to Memorize

By Admin · 4 October 2026 · 8 min read

Walking into an algebra or geometry exam without the key formulas in your head feels like showing up to a construction site without tools. You know what you need to build, but you can't start.

The fix is surprisingly small. Ten core equations unlock a huge share of high school problems, and memorizing them acts as psychological armor: you stop panicking, stop flipping pages, and can often cut your problem-solving time in half. Below is your study sheet, with what each symbol means and a quick worked example for every formula.

Top 10 Essential Math Formulas

PART 1
The Algebra & Coordinate Geometry Foundations

1The Slope Formula

m = y₂ − y₁x₂ − x₁
  • m = slope (steepness of a line)
  • (x₁, y₁), (x₂, y₂) = two points on the line

Example: through (1, 3) and (3, 7): m = (7 − 3) ÷ (3 − 1) = 2

2The Quadratic Formula

x = −b ± √(b² − 4ac)2a
  • Solves ax² + bx + c = 0 (a ≠ 0)
  • b² − 4ac is the discriminant: it tells you how many real answers exist

Example: x² − 5x + 6 = 0 → x = (5 ± √1) ÷ 2 → x = 3 or x = 2. Try the calculator

3The Distance Formula

d = √[(x₂ − x₁)² + (y₂ − y₁)²]
  • d = straight-line distance between two points
  • It is the Pythagorean theorem in disguise

Example: (1, 2) to (4, 6): d = √(3² + 4²) = √25 = 5

4The Midpoint Formula

M = ( x₁ + x₂2 , y₁ + y₂2 )
  • M = the point exactly halfway between two points
  • Just average the x-values and average the y-values

Example: (2, 4) and (8, 10): M = (10 ÷ 2, 14 ÷ 2) = (5, 7)

5The Simple Interest Equation

I = P × R × T
  • P = principal (starting amount), R = yearly rate as a decimal, T = time in years
  • If R is given as a percent, use I = PRT ÷ 100

Example: ₹10,000 at 6% for 3 years: I = 10,000 × 0.06 × 3 = ₹1,800. Try the calculator

PART 2
The Core Geometry & Trigonometry Essentials

6The Pythagorean Theorem

a² + b² = c²
  • Works for right triangles only
  • c = hypotenuse (longest side, opposite the right angle)

Example: legs 3 and 4: c² = 9 + 16 = 25 → c = 5

7Area and Circumference of a Circle

A = πr²    C = 2πr
  • r = radius (half the diameter); π ≈ 3.14 or 22/7
  • Area is in square units, circumference in ordinary units

Example: r = 7 (using π ≈ 22/7): A = 154, C = 44

8Area of a Triangle

A = 12 × b × h
  • b = base, h = perpendicular height (not the slanted side)

Example: b = 10, h = 6: A = ½ × 10 × 6 = 30

9SOH-CAH-TOA (Right Triangle Trigonometry)

sin θ = OppositeHypotenuse   cos θ = AdjacentHypotenuse   tan θ = OppositeAdjacent
  • SOH: Sine = Opposite ÷ Hypotenuse
  • CAH: Cosine = Adjacent ÷ Hypotenuse
  • TOA: Tangent = Opposite ÷ Adjacent

Example: in a 3-4-5 triangle, the angle opposite the side 3 has sin θ = 3 ÷ 5 = 0.6. Try the calculator

10Total Surface Area of a Cylinder

TSA = 2πr² + 2πrh = 2πr(r + h)
  • 2πr² = the two circular ends
  • 2πrh = the curved side (a rolled-up rectangle)

Example: r = 7, h = 10 (π ≈ 22/7): TSA = 2 × 22/7 × 7 × 17 = 748

Active Recall: Flashcard Strategies for Rapid Memory Retention

Re-reading this sheet feels productive but it is passive. Test yourself instead:

1

Cover and write. Put the name on one side of a flashcard and the formula on the other. Write the formula from memory on blank paper before flipping the card.

2

Space it out. Review on Day 1, Day 3, Day 7 and Day 14. Cards you get right move to the longer gap, and cards you miss go back to tomorrow.

3

Apply, don't just recite. Make a second card for each formula with a mini problem on it, using brand-new numbers, so you practise choosing and using the formula.
