How to Calculate Semester GPA

Quick answer: multiply each subject's grade point by its credits, add those results up, then divide by the total credits. Semester GPA = Σ(Grade point × Credits) ÷ Σ(Credits).

GPA = 45.3 ÷ 13 = 3.48

A 4-credit subject counts twice as much as a 2-credit subject with the same grade — that's why credits matter.

How to Calculate Overall CGPA of All Semesters

Quick answer: multiply each semester's SGPA by that semester's total credits, add all the results, then divide by the sum of all credits. Overall CGPA = Σ(SGPA × Semester credits) ÷ Σ(Semester credits). Do not simply average the SGPAs unless every semester has the same credits.

Use the Overall CGPA tab above, or follow these steps by hand:

1
List every semester with its SGPA and total credits (from your marksheet).
2
Multiply each SGPA by that semester's credits.
3
Add all those products, and add up all the credits separately.
4
Divide total grade points by total credits — that's your overall CGPA.
SemesterSGPACreditsSGPA × Credits
Semester 18.422184.8
Semester 28.824211.2
Semester 39.124218.4
Total—70614.4
Overall CGPA = 614.4 ÷ 70 = 8.78

Some universities publish their own CGPA rule (for example, counting only certain semesters). If yours does, follow the official method.

Free GPA Calculator for College & University Students

This GPA calculator is built for students who want a quick, correct answer without a spreadsheet. As a college GPA calculator it supports the 4.0 letter-grade scale; as a semester GPA calculator it turns your subject grades and credits into an SGPA; and as an overall CGPA calculator it combines every semester into one cumulative figure.

Because GPA is a credit-weighted average, a 4-credit core subject affects your result twice as much as a 2-credit elective. The calculator handles that weighting automatically and shows the working so you can match it with your university marksheet.

Planning ahead? The Target GPA tab answers "what GPA do I need next semester?" — enter your current CGPA, credits completed and target, and it tells you the SGPA required (and whether it's even possible). When you're done, convert your CGPA to a percentage with the built-in converter or the full CGPA to percentage calculator.

GPA calculator — common questions

Multiply each semester's SGPA by that semester's total credits, add the results, and divide by the total credits of all semesters. For example, SGPAs of 8.4, 8.8 and 9.1 with 22, 24 and 24 credits give (184.8 + 211.2 + 218.4) ÷ 70 = 8.78. Use the Overall CGPA tab above to do it automatically.

Multiply each subject's grade point by its credits, add them all, then divide by the total credits. Semester GPA = Σ(grade point × credits) ÷ Σ(credits). In the calculator, just choose each grade and enter the credits.

SGPA (or semester GPA) is your credit-weighted average for one semester. CGPA (cumulative GPA, also called overall GPA) is the credit-weighted average across all semesters completed so far. In the US, "GPA" usually means the cumulative figure on a 4.0 scale.

Select the 4.0 scale, choose the letter grade for each course (A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3 and so on) and enter the course credits. The calculator multiplies, adds and divides for you. Some colleges treat A+ as 4.3 — use the Custom scale if yours does.

Only if every semester has the same number of credits. Otherwise the correct method is credit-weighted: Σ(SGPA × credits) ÷ Σ(credits). A simple average can be slightly off when semesters have different credit totals.

Required SGPA = (Target CGPA × total credits after this semester − Current CGPA × credits completed) ÷ credits this semester. The Target GPA tab does this for you and warns you if the target can't be reached in one semester.

It depends on your university. CBSE uses CGPA × 9.5, Anna University uses CGPA × 10, and VTU uses (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. Use the built-in converter on this page, and always confirm the official rule for your institution.

Yes. GPA is a weighted average, so a 4-credit subject has twice the effect of a 2-credit subject with the same grade. Doing well in high-credit core subjects moves your GPA the most.
