Quick facts

What students should know about the TNEA cutoff

The basics of how Tamil Nadu engineering admissions turn your Class 12 marks into a rank.

🧮

One simple formula

Cutoff = Maths + Physics ÷ 2 + Chemistry ÷ 2, using your Class 12 marks out of 100 in each subject.

∑

Maths counts double

Maths is worth 100 of the 200 marks. Physics and Chemistry are worth 50 each.

📋

No entrance exam

TNEA is purely merit based. Only Maths, Physics and Chemistry from Class 12 are used.

🏫

Rank decides your round

Your rank, not your cutoff alone, decides when you are called for counselling and which seats you can choose.

🎓
Check the latest rules. Dates, normalisation and eligibility can change every year. Use the official TNEA website and information brochure. StudyHelpAI is an independent study tool and is not affiliated with DoTE, Anna University or the Government of Tamil Nadu.
Worked examples

See how a cutoff is worked out

Three sample sets of marks, one for each 2026 counselling round band. Tap a button to run the same marks in the calculator.

Maths 95, Physics 92, Chemistry 88Strong all-round marks

Key steps
1
Apply the formula. 95 + 92 ÷ 2 + 88 ÷ 2 = 95 + 46 + 44 = 185 out of 200.
2
Compare with 2026 round bands. A cutoff of 185 is above 171.333, the 2026 Round 1 limit, so it falls in the Round 1 band (general ranks 1 to 37,976).
Counselling tip
Within Round 1 the exact rank still matters a lot for top government colleges. Check previous years' closing cutoffs for your community on the official site.

Maths 85, Physics 78, Chemistry 80Good marks, lower Physics

Key steps
1
Apply the formula. 85 + 78 ÷ 2 + 80 ÷ 2 = 85 + 39 + 40 = 164 out of 200.
2
Compare with 2026 round bands. A cutoff of 164 lies between 135.75 and 171, so it falls in the Round 2 band (general ranks 37,977 to 1,31,093).
Counselling tip
Round 2 still has many good seats. Fill your choices carefully and order them by preference, since the system reads your list from the top.

Maths 70, Physics 65, Chemistry 60Mid-range marks

Key steps
1
Apply the formula. 70 + 65 ÷ 2 + 60 ÷ 2 = 70 + 32.5 + 30 = 132.5 out of 200.
2
Compare with 2026 round bands. A cutoff of 132.5 is below 135.75, so it falls in the Round 3 band (general ranks beyond 1,31,093).
Counselling tip
Maths gives the biggest boost. Before the next attempt or a Class 12 re-exam, each extra Maths mark adds one full cutoff mark.

Tips

How to use your TNEA cutoff

Five habits that turn a number into a plan.

1

Use board marks, not percentages

Enter your marks out of 100 in each of Maths, Physics and Chemistry. The overall Class 12 percentage is not used.

Try itRun a sample set of marks
2

Know that Maths counts double

Each Maths mark adds 1 to your cutoff, while each Physics or Chemistry mark adds only 0.5.

3

Check your community rank

4

Plan choices around round bands

The round you are called for depends on your rank. Compare your cutoff with the 2026 bands in the table above, then research colleges and branches you could target.

Use the gap to improve

How the TNEA cutoff and rank work

Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA) fills BE and B.Tech seats through counselling run by the Directorate of Technical Education (DoTE). There is no entrance exam. Your rank is built entirely from your Class 12 marks in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.

Your cutoff is calculated out of 200: Mathematics counts for 100, and Physics and Chemistry count for 50 each. Candidates are then listed from the highest cutoff to the lowest, and ties are broken in a fixed order. The result is your general rank, and you also receive a community rank based on your reservation category.

Marks from other boards

Students from CBSE, ICSE and other boards have their marks normalised by DoTE before the formula is applied, so that all boards are compared on a common scale. The exact method and the board-wise reference marks are published in the official TNEA information brochure. This calculator applies the standard formula to the marks you enter, so use normalised marks where you have them.

Why round bands matter

General academic counselling runs in three rounds, and your rank decides which round you take part in. In 2026 the first round covered the top 37,976 ranks. Colleges and branches in high demand tend to fill early, so knowing which band your cutoff falls in helps you plan your choice list. The bands in this tool are from 2026 and will move in 2027.

⚠️
This is an estimate, not your result. The round band and rank range come from the 2026 rank list and are only a guide. Your official cutoff, rank and round are shown on your login at tneaonline.org.
📚
Not a replacement for preparation. Use the calculator to plan, then keep working on Maths, Physics and Chemistry. Every extra Maths mark adds a full mark to your cutoff.
FAQ

TNEA cutoff calculator: questions answered

TNEA cutoff = Mathematics marks + (Physics marks ÷ 2) + (Chemistry marks ÷ 2), using your Class 12 marks out of 100 in each subject. Mathematics counts fully for 100 marks, while Physics and Chemistry count for 50 marks each, so the maximum cutoff is 200.

The maximum cutoff is 200. In the TNEA 2026 rank list, 53 candidates had a perfect cutoff of 200 out of 200.

No. TNEA engineering rank lists use only Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry from Class 12. Marks in English, your language paper and any other subject are not part of the cutoff.

The formula is the same, but marks from boards other than the Tamil Nadu State Board are normalised by DoTE before the rank list is prepared. If you know your normalised marks, enter those here. Otherwise treat the result as indicative and check the official TNEA information brochure for the normalisation method.

Ties are broken in order using Mathematics marks, then Physics marks, then Chemistry (the optional subject) marks, then date of birth (the older candidate gets priority), and finally a random number assigned by DoTE.

No. The cutoff is your score out of 200. Your rank is your position among all ranked candidates, which numbered 2,36,017 in 2026. You also get a community rank for your reservation category. Your official ranks are published on tneaonline.org.

In TNEA 2026, Round 1 covered general ranks 1 to 37,976 (cutoff 200 to 171.333), Round 2 covered ranks 37,977 to 1,31,093 (cutoff 171 to 135.75), and Round 3 covered the remaining candidates. These boundaries change every year, so use them as a guide only.
